Overview

The history of the village of Plainfaing merges with that of the Ban de Fraize of which it was part. In the sixteenth century, Jean Hercquel (Herculanus), canon of Saint-Dié born in Plainfaing, built in this village a chapel called «de Saint-Genest». In 1725 the parish priest of Fraize, Perrotey, established a vicar at Plainfaing. In 1781 the inhabitants asked for the assembly of the various incomes of the chapel of Saint-Genest and the erection of a cure in Plainfaing, committing to build a church. On June 20, 1782, the bishop of Saint-Dié dismembered the villages of Plainfaing, Ban Saint-Dié, Noirgoutte, Habaurupt, la Hardalle, Chaume, and Forêt from the parish church of Fraize and erected the parish of Plainfaing. Near the chapel Saint-Genest, now destroyed, is the church built in 1782. An organ with a keyboard and pedals was installed in 1821/23\\.
