Fife ~ Central Our Linen Stories in former Linen Works Kirkcaldy Kirkcaldy
can claim to be Scotland’s foremost town of flax and linen heritage. It was
home to the last linen weavers in Scotland, who closed their doors only this
year and at its height, more people per head of population were employed in
the linen industry than any other in Scotland. ‘Journeys in Design’ is a
cultural initiative offering rolling programmes of exhibitions and events, and
this year inaugurates Scotland’s first Flax and Linen Festival, with its hub
in Kirkcaldy. The Festival Exhibition is in the former Stocks Linen Factory,
now repurposed as a Carpet Warehouse. The building has key features and an
intriguing back story to tell. We are calling on your help to build a ‘Linen
Works Kirkcaldy’ display, with your stories and artefacts. The exhibition
includes a novel mapping of ‘The Flax Fields of Fife’ and a tribute to the
hard-working women of the Linen Industry called ‘Making Millie’. Also on
display are stunning contemporary designs in flax fibre and linen from across
the nation and beyond including Flax Skis, Flax Chair and Flax Building
components. With a regular series of Exhibition Talks and an allied series of
Walks and Workshops, this fascinating building forms a perfect hub for this
new Festival. FLAX HERITAGE WALKS Stocks Warehouse is the hub for Fife's Flax
Festival and will be open on both the Saturday and Sunday of each of Fife's
Doors Open weekends in September. A series of talks will take place each day
at 1030 followed by guided walks which will start at the Stocks Works. LEARN
