Overview

13 September 2025 (11:00 - 15:00) 14 September 2025 (13:00 - 15:00) Kilwinning Abbey was founded in the 12th century by Tironensian monks from Kelso. A sister abbey to Kelso and Arbroath abbeys, it played an important part in Scotland’s history. Now, the town centre location is the site of the Abbey Church and the Abbey Tower Heritage Centre (currently closed). “In the Footsteps of the Monks” While Kilwinning Abbey Heritage Centre is closed for repairs, volunteers from Kilwinning Heritage will offer free guided tours of the Abbey precincts, taking in the great nave, the magnificent southern transept, the processional arch, cloisters and chapter house of the Abbey, founded by Tironensian monks from Kelso in the 12th century. Guides will tell the story of 900 years of continuous Christian worship on this site. Starting from the WW1 war memorial in front to the Abbey Church, tours will take place as follows: Saturday 11.15, 12.00, 12.45, 13.30, 14.15 Sunday 13.00, 13.45, 14.30
