Overview

While the imposing apartment building housing L’Archiduc was built in 1892 to plans by architect Alexandre Danthisne, the interior of the famous café-bar, which occupies the first floor of No. 6, was fitted out much later in the purest Art Deco style. Popular with Brussels night owls, the venue opened its doors in 1937 at the instigation of jazz musician Stan Brenders, a collaborator of Djano Reinhart. He entrusted the interior design to architect Franz Van Ruyskenvelde, who made a point of using every inch of the space. Dark wood panelling, elegant chrome fittings and indirect lighting created a hushed atmosphere, particularly pleasant when listening to the jazz melodies of the grand piano, the focal point of the room. Narrow benches and streamlined armchairs welcome the faithful on the first floor or the mezzanine. The illuminated bar also attracts attention with its rich collection of bottles in a variety of shapes. L’Archiduc is one of a kind, continuing the pleasant tradition of piano bars, inviting its faithful to recitals, concerts and shows in an extremely warm atmosphere. (CL 03/03/2011)
