LECTURE / Votive and Public Sculpture of Bebrina and Dubočac
In the area of Bebrina and Dubočac parishes, not far from Slavonski Brod, a large number of shrines and roadside crosses have been preserved that testify to the widespread piety of the local population. Their placement along roads between villages and within villages, near parish churches or branch chapels, also testifies to their other function, that of "saintly guard", which on the Sava, the historical border of the Ottoman and Habsburg Empires and the southern border of the Slavonian Military Frontier, took on the function of a magic circle, or defense against disease, misfortune and other evils. The lecture explores the concept of "saintly guard" in the Military Frontier area, as well as the origin and development of public sculpture typology with reference to commissioners and the import of iconological solutions from German lands.
