La Buvette
Originally a neoclassical house dating from 1874, the ground floor was turned into a shop in 1911, and then, more specifically, a butcher’s shop in 1921. Architect Louis Verbeyst remodelled the building in 1930, but it was in 1943 that architect François Mees gave the facade its current appearance, in a modernist style mixed with Art Deco. While the first-floor bay is surrounded by yellow glazed panels, the ground floor, with its axial oak door and two sash windows in the same material, is clad in the same cream-coloured ceramic tiles as the interior, this time punctuated by thin black bands. The premises, which today house a restaurant, have managed to preserve the metal rods and marble display units of the former butcher’s shop, the ceiling decorated with diamond-shaped marble panels and the round-arched door leading to the kitchen. The kitchen features openwork panelling and a blue-tiled frame. All in all, a most interesting Art Deco-style decorative ensemble. (CL 07/10/2021)
