Lar Housing Trust bought the site at Port Edgar in South Queensferry in September of 2021, it covers an area of some 17 acres and during early 2022 we applied for planning permission to convert the buildings into homes and a restaurant/café. With a mix of facilities and tenures this development will become a real community with extremely high green credentials, as the carbon capture within the walls of the buildings is retained and sympathetic, fabric first development methods are used to enhance the site.
Join us for a guided tour of the historic Old Port Edgar Barracks site as construction work at the development begins.
Built just after the First World War in 1919, the site has, over the years, been used for both military and civilian purposes that include being used as a training centre for British and Allied servicemen as they prepared for the Normandy landings in 1944. The site was also used as a minesweeping training centre and a storage facility for the Museum of Scotland.
Obtained by Lar Housing Trust in 2021, plans are to convert the site into quality homes, a restaurant/café, a short term let facility and a Men’s Shed. This tour will follow a specific route through the site, highlighting areas of interest and give you time to ask questions.
Due to the fact that this is a construction site, all visitors will be required to wear PPE. Vests, hard hats and boots will be supplied by Lar Housing Trust but there are hazards on the site such as nails, screws, and broken glass. We can provide suitable footwear but will require your shoe size and acceptance of our terms and conditions in advance of visiting the site.

2025 Theme: Architectural Heritage: Windows to the Past, Doors to the Future
Our development has a rich and long history that is being preserved and carried through into the future of the Old Port Edgar Barracks. This site lay derelict for years, a local landmark that was once a bustling naval barracks with connections for many locals as well as people from much further afield. Much of the original structure of the buildings is intact and Lar Housing Trust intends to maintain the integrity of the site by reusing, renovating and recycling to preserve it, while bringing much needed quality, affordable housing to the area. We have worked with the local history and heritage organisations to discover more about the site from those who know it best and plan to document and share this as part of the redevelopment.
The site is in construction and, as such there are hazards. In terms of access, part of the tour is up two flights of stairs and is not accessible. Parts of the site are accessible for wheelchairs but the terrain is rough and stony in places. If you want to attend and have additional accessibility requirements, please let us know in advance and we will do our utmost to accommodate. We have limited parking on site.
