Overview

After experimenting with Art Nouveau, after the First World War Jean-Baptiste Dewin adopted a style influenced by Art Deco and the International School. He put his knowledge into practice on the new Forest Town Hall, which he designed in 1925. However, it was not until 1934 that work could begin. A 50 m-high belfry towers over a massive building of yellow brick, bluestone and concrete, the preferred materials of the period. The tower is adorned with a clock and four sculpted bronze groups symbolising municipal rights. Restored to their former glory, they are again shining brightly since the town hall recently underwent a major restoration. Dewin’s architecture was functional and logical, but not without a certain luxury, as exotic woods (avodire, ebony, bubinga, iroko kambala) and polished marble form the basis of the interior decor. Inaugurated in 1938, the town hall features a vast two-storey office under a zenithal glass roof, as well as a large hall with a grand staircase, with facings combining white Carrara marble, blue Bioul marble and black Mazy marble, a beautiful ensemble complemented by stained glass windows and wrought ironwork (listed 10/22/1992).
