Overview

Located on a sandbar accessible at low tide in the town of Marck, the Walde Lighthouse represents the demarcation between the North Sea and the Channel. Unique in France due to its original structure on wrought iron piles, the building offers little grip to the assaults of the sea and a good base in moving soils. The speed of construction gives it a much lower cost than that of a traditional structure. The EPAC association proposes a walk on the beach to retrace the history of the lighthouse, put into service in 1859\\. A second initiative to classify the lighthouse in the inventory of historic monuments is underway, after that of 1998, in order to save the lighthouse from a radical reinforcement. At low tide, the sandbar hosts colonies of seals and numerous seabirds.
Access
