Commissioned in 1977, the Fessenheim power plant is the first nuclear power plant to be shut down under the Multiannual Energy Programme, which aims to reduce the share of nuclear energy in the French electricity mix. In 43 years of operation, it produced 448 TWh of electricity, the equivalent of 30 years of Alsatian electricity consumption. Currently in the pre-deviction phase, the Fessenheim nuclear power plant is confirmed as an emblematic installation of the Alsatian industrial heritage. Its dismantling is scheduled to begin by 2026, as soon as the dismantling decree issued by the Minister of Ecological Transition, after public inquiry and opinion of the Nuclear Safety Authority. Until then, the coming years will be devoted to preparing the facilities for their dismantling.
