Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, between industry and art
Admired for the simplicity of its lines and shapes, as well as the diversity of its materials, Art Deco hides behind its aesthetic facades a shift towards a new model of how society should function. Despite previous trends, this decorative style was no longer aimed solely at the elite, but at a wider segment of the population. Its manifestation now called more for the establishment of collaboration between artists, artisans and industries, promising real economic gains. Our stroll through the heart of the Old Molenbeek district invites us to reflect on the evolution of the relationship between art/culture and industry from the past to the present day. In the past, this canal-side district was Belgium’s most industrialised area. Factories, workshops and manufacturing plants define the urban and social world of this municipality to this day. However, decades of crisis and social and economic upheaval have led to questions about its identity. Can culture and art provide a solution? In collaboration with La Fonderie.
