Founded in 1828 as “The Museum of The Banff Institution” this is the oldest museum in Scotland north of Perth. The Banff Institution was then dissolved in 1875 and the collections passed to Banff Town Council.
The present museum and library building were built in 1902. Banff Preservation and Heritage Society currently run the Museum in partnership with Aberdeenshire Museums Service.
The exhibits show a vast range of interesting artefacts from the Celtic period up to the modern day. They reflect life in Banffshire and show some stunning examples of our historical past in Banff and Macduff. There is also a varied collection of Banff Silver.

This year Banff Preservation and Heritage Society is celebrating its 60th anniversary, 60 years of saving the built heritage of Banff. The Summer exhibition in the museum celebrates the many projects carried out by the Society and looks back into the history of the Banff Preservation Society, saving the town’s very rich built heritage and looking to the future, continuing our work to save the built heritage and history of the town.
The first floor can be accessed by lift.
There is a lift to allow access to the first floor.
