The building corresponds to the juxtaposition of two buildings of different period: - a part built between 1821 and 1826 of classical style which housed a mint, a palace of justice, a science school and a business school before becoming an integral part of the museum from 1970\\. - a section inaugurated in 1875 at the end of the 19th century to house natural history collections. The entrance is surmounted by an historiated pediment, sculpted by Guillaume Grootaers, which represents the science illuminating the world.
