The Northern Lighthouse Board is the General Lighthouse Authority for Scotland and the Isle of Man. We have provided a vital safety service to mariners since 1786 and are responsible for the superintendence and management of all lights, buoys and beacons within Scottish and Isle of Man waters. Our service makes a significant contribution to the prevention of accidents and incidents around the coastline, safeguarding not only lives and property, but also protecting our precious marine environment.
84 George Street has been our headquarters since 1832. Built in 1786 as part of James Craig’s New Town development, the original façade is almost unchanged. The building is marked by a miniature working lighthouse outside the entrance and it's here where our network of lights are remotely monitored.
