On the historic roads

Workshops led by the director Christine Coulange - Sisygambis- Les 7 Portes.

Embark on a sensory and interactive journey at the heart of cultural exchanges in Mayotte and the Indian Ocean. Two digital experiences are offered to you:

1. Web documentary The Routes of the Trance

Explore an immersive universe through interactive maps that invite you to become a navigator of your own journey. This web documentary highlights the traditional music and cultures of Mayotte, revealing the cross-influences of the Indian Ocean. Specialists trace the major trade routes taken by Arab, Persian, Bantu, Indonesian, Malay, European, Portuguese, Indo-Pakistani and Chinese navigators. These exchanges have shaped a unique blend, on the ancient silk roads, spices, and slavery. From Mayotte, the Comoros and Madagascar, discover 32 cities and 10 countries, including Zanzibar, Tanzania, Kenya or even Egypt. More than 70 films offer you a sensitive and respectful vision of peoples, their roots and their contemporary realities. This evolving, collaborative and multilingual web documentary (French, Kibushi, English) is developed by Sisygambis-Les 7 Portes with the University of Mayotte and the support of the Department of Cultural Affairs of Mayotte.

2. Discovering the Rock of Dzaoudzi

Discover the historic district of Dzaoudzi with a sound tour and illustrated in 12 steps. Erected on its rock, the site has always been a place of power and a strategic center of Mayotte. Before the arrival of the French, it housed an Arab village with raffia and coconut huts, connected by winding alleys where tombs and dwellings coexisted. Capital of the sultans, it is here that the last of them, Andriantsouli, had established his residence. It is also on this rock that Captain Passot proclaims, on June 13, 1843, the taking of Mayotte by France, followed by the abolition of slavery in 1847. From the governors' house to the barracks, from the Boulevard des Crabes to the first hospital in Mayotte, the route highlights a unique architectural heritage, symbol of the colonial and administrative history of the island. Even today, the rock retains this strategic role, while offering a valuable testimony to the history and landscapes of Mayotte. The audio guide, available in four languages (French, Shimaore, Kibushi and English), was created by Christine Coulange - Sisygambis at the MuMA-museum in Mayotte as part of an artistic creation residency with the Mayotte Cultural Affairs Department. Informations Free admission - Friday workshops for school children, Saturday all public
