Overview

The historic St. Kevin's Church of Ireland in Hollywood, Co. Wicklow, dates to the seventeenth century. It is one of the few surviving churches from that period, retaining much of its original structure and which is still in use today.

While also being a place of worship, St. Kevin's is a venue for various music and community events, including Music under the Mountains, Blessington Millennial Choir, history lectures, and art exhibitions. It has also welcomed international students learning the history of Hollywood village and St. Kevin. Additionally, the church has featured in films and TV ads, such as Dancing at Lughnasa, Braveheart, The Siege of Jadotville, Michael Collins, The Wonder, and a Kerrygold ad showcasing the village.

Located on a site of Christian worship for over 800 years, St. Kevin’s Church sits in a walled mound that suggests a pre-Christian ceremonial site. The discovery of five medieval cross-inscribed stones in the graveyard, dating from the thirteenth or fourteenth centuries, indicates ecclesiastical activity before the current seventeenth-century church was constructed.

St. Kevin’s is the traditional starting point for the Camino de Glendalough, following the medieval pilgrimage route, St. Kevin’s Way. Many pilgrims receive a blessing at the church before journeying to Glendalough.

The church has received funding from Wicklow County Council’s Community Monuments Fund for conservation efforts.

The day of events will begin with a service at 10:30am, followed by an art exhibition, talks, lectures, and music recitals. The church and graveyard will be open for visitors to explore.
