Overview

Although the exhibition is the visible part of a museum, it does not always reflect everything that takes place behind the scenes. The fundamental mission of a museum in France like ours is to conserve, restore, study, enhance and enrich its collections. Today, the rich imagery heritage of the Visses finally finds its place in the Westercamp museum, thanks to the purchase by the city of the collection from the former Wentzel printing house and its successors. This is the museum’s most important acquisition, resulting in a major operation planned for at least five years to process this exceptional and heterogeneous collection, including machines, tools, archives and nearly 50,000 printed images. "Images by Thousands" retraces this unprecedented stage in the history of the museum, through an exhibition that reveals the hidden side of the reserves and the work carried out on the collections.
