Phibsboro: Dublin's Victorian Village
Join your guide Declan Gannon on a walking tour of Phibsboro, a neighbourhood that’s transformed from Dublin’s Victorian village to the “coolest place to live”.
Meet Declan at the Garden of Remembrance and walk from there through lovely, villa-lined thoroughfares with such picturesque names as Geraldine, Myrtle, Shamrock, and Primrose Streets. Weave in and out of these streets until you get to one of Dublin’s most beautiful secret gardens!
From there, walk along the banks of the Royal Canal while exploring its history, then on to Doyle’s Corner, the epicentre of Phibsboro, where we will visit the majestic St Peter’s Church, one of Dublin’s best-known landmarks, and admire the church’s exquisite Harry Clarke stained glass window.
We will then head over to St Peter’s Road, once home to James Joyce, where we will see the historic building that houses St Peter’s National School and view the outside of Bohemian Football Club, home of the “Bohs”, the oldest football club in Dublin.
Then on to the Phibsboro Shopping Centre, the second-oldest shopping centre in Dublin, where we will observe an architectural style that can only be described as “brutalist”. Here, the tour officially concludes, but there is the option to seek rest, refreshment, and a warm welcome in The Hut pub, a Victorian gem of a building.
