Pilgrimage in Medieval Tipperary.
Pilgrimage played a central role in the devotion lives of medieval people. This talk will discuss the Irish historical and archaeological evidence that points to men and women from all social classes engaging in pilgrimage to holy places of local, regional, national and international destination. There will also be a special emphasis on the Tipperary pilgrim sites such as Holycross abbey and the Rock of Cashel. This talk will be delivered by Dr. Louise Nugent in the Hall of the Vicar's Choral at the Rock of Cashel. Louise Nugent is an archaeologist, researcher and author specializing in medieval pilgrimage and pilgrim souvenirs. In 2010 she completed a doctoral thesis Pilgrimage in Medieval Ireland AD 600-1600 at the school of Archaeology at University College Dublin. She curates the blog Pilgrimage in Medieval Ireland and is the author of the book Journeys of Faith: Stories of Pilgrimage from Medieval Ireland.
