Presentation of a LiDAR survey of the royal and ritual landscape of Knockma Hill, County Galway
The Donaghpatrick-Kilcoona Heritage Society is delighted to present the brand-new findings of a LiDAR survey of the archaeology of Knockma Hill, County Galway. Once the ancient capital of West Connacht, Knockma is studded with cairns, ringforts, souterrains, standing stones, enclosures, a crannóg, early Celtic monasteries and a medieval castle, dating from the Neolithic period through to the Middle Ages. Before now, however, its ceremonial landscape has never been studied. As a result we were so excited when our survey proposal was awarded funding by the Heritage Council Community Heritage Grant Scheme in June 2024! Dr Paul Naessens, of Western Aerial Surveys, has been conducting the survey this summer using the very latest remote technology, mapping an extraordinary digital landscape of forgotten monuments. Supplementing these exciting results will be the stunning photography of key sites on Knockma captured by artist and poet Claire Loader, and an introduction to the history, mythology and archaeology of the hill by medievalist Dr Jessica Cooke. We look forward to seeing you there!
