Overview

Punch Magazine was first published in London in 1841 as a weekly comic and quickly became one of the most famous periodicals ever to published. The publication ran from 1841-2002 and was a champion of illustrators, engravers and writers during that time including WM Thackeray, PG Wodehouse and Jack B Yeats. Political satire was at the heart of Punch Magazine however, it is now recognised as a rich resource on political and social history, particularly from the Victorian era. Punch is also credited with ushering in, through its satirical drawings, the comic cartoon genre as it is known today. Yeats Library, ATU Sligo has a collection of the first hundred original Punch Magazine volumes from 1841 -1891. The condition of this collection was deteriorating due to leather binding decay and in need of attention which prevented use for research purposes. With the support of Heritage Council funding this year, the Library has enlisted the expertise of a conservation book binder to restore the collection to as near as possible the original condition enabling the materials to be available for public display and use for teaching and research purposes. A selection of early volumes from this Punch collection will be on display to the public during Heritage Week from Monday 19th-Friday 23rd August in Yeats Library, ATU Sligo.
