Queen Elisabeth Medical Foundation
At a time when clinical biology was still in its infancy, the City of Brussels constructed a building on the site of the Brugmann University Hospital to house the various laboratories of a research institute created at the instigation of Queen Elisabeth and Dr Nolf in 1926. The plans were entrusted to Henry Lacoste, an architect who oversaw the project from 1927 to 1933. It features a massive building decked out entirely in reddish-brown Belvedere bricks. The facades are enhanced by colourful friezes that combine green, blue and orange marble slabs. The interior reflects Lacoste’s passion for Antiquity, notably the use of glass tiles (marbrite) to create a geometric decor reminiscent of the polychromy of Roman mosaics and Egyptian cloisonné. It is true that he was the mission leader for excavations at Delphi and Apamea in Syria. In the lobby, green, blue and white harmonise with marble paving in a variety of hues. The staircase is lit by non-figurative stained-glass windows. Flowers frame the library door, which is also decorated with colourful tiles all around. The Queen Elisabeth Medical Foundation continues to support 16 university teams across the country.
