A look back at rural country's shops in Abbeyknockmoy.
The event is intended to share the story of the many rural country shops that served our communities. Several decades ago the parish had over twenty country shops dotted throughout the community.
It is hoped that this project will help preserve the memories, and present how the country shop was more than a place of commerce. Through the memories and stories collected we have learned that these family ran retail outlets played an integral part of Irish rural communities. Country shops were where we met our neighbours, spoke about the weather, shouldered our grief, solved problems, celebrated the good news and carefully broke the bad news. The event will share some visual, audio and documented research collected from families living in the area of their memories of running country shops.
