Roman Expansion in the Mediterranean - Talk by Mr Jordan Sant
During this talk, Jordan Sant will analyse the establishment of the Roman Republic as the major power in the Mediterranean. From a minor settlement by the Tiber, Rome became the dominant power in the Italian Peninsula, to eventually collide and conquer other powerful empires. The period in question is for the most part that stretching between the conquest of Italy and the end of the second century BC, a period which saw Rome conquer most of the Mare Internum. This will be examined through the political and institutional setup of the Republic, the wars fought against other powers, such as the pivotal Punic Wars, and the legal aspect, giving special importance to crucial themes such as that of citizenship and the ordering of Rome’s conquests. These themes reflect the ability of the Romans to effectively affirm themselves as an imperial power and establish an imperial system stretching over three continents and sowing the seeds of a lasting legacy. This talk will take place on Friday 6th October at St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat, at 18:00. Tickets are free, but pre-booking is required, as seats are limited. Tickets available from all our musuems & sites and online here: https://heritagemalta.mt/store/e1297/ This event forms part of Heritage Malta’s programme for this year’s European Heritage Days.
