Overview

Thanks to the dynamism of the Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, the Joseph Marien stadium has already seen a number of lively sporting events. Surrounded by the greenery of Duden Park, the complex in its current state was inaugurated by Prince Charles of Belgium on 29 August 1926. It was decided to build a new grandstand along Chaussée de Bruxelles, which can still be seen today. The decision to modify the stadium was taken at the end of the 1925-1926 season, but the complex had already been in use for some time, since its official opening was reported on 14 September 1919. In those days, players had changing rooms in the park, and reached the stadium by descending stairs in the middle of the standing areas of the "popular" block. The situation had already improved considerably, since sportsmen had previously had to make do with Place Van Meenen and train on a lawn behind the velodrome in La Cambre wood. The Art Deco building was designed by architect Albert Callewaert and decorated with monumental sculptures by Oscar De Clerck. (CL 11/02/2010) Saturday and Sunday at 10.00 am (FR), 11.00 am (NL), 12.00 pm (FR), 2.00 pm (EN), 3.00 pm (FR), 4.00 pm (NL), 5.00 pm (FR) (duration 45min, maximum 20 people per departure). Please note: the building is currently under restoration and surrounded by scaffolding, but the interior still holds many surprising treasures. In collaboration with Kurt Deswert and the Willemsfonds Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest.
