Overview

The Route of the Embroidered Counters arises from the Lab-CREARTE Eco-Cultural Design and
Innovation Laboratory of Red Arrayán, within the "Plan EnTre2" project that this organization has
been developing in the Sierra de Francia territory of Salamanca since 2018 in collaboration with town halls and other public entities such as the Ministry of Culture, the Junta de Castilla y León and the Diputación de Salamanca.

This project, whose main objective is the recognition, enhancement, visibility and safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Serrano Popular Embroidery, also develops other innovative lines of application of the rich serrano iconography to new artistic and craft supports of innovative application as decorative elements. that contribute to the beautification of eco-cultural routes and urban complexes in the territorial ecosystem.

Thanks to the public-private collaboration with municipalities such as Cepeda, Mogarraz, Villanueva
del Conde, Sotoserrano or in this case San Esteban de la Sierra, we are developing participatory
artistic interventions and embellishment of public spaces with the guiding thread of this cultural and
identity heritage. of the Shire.

The Route of the Embroidered Counters of San Esteban de la Sierra is a circular urban route that
offers us a tour of some of the main streets in the heart of San Esteban and where we can appreciate, like an open-air museum, the covers of the counters of light decorated with drawings and updated interpretations of the iconographic universe of the "Bordado Popular Serrano", in the process of being declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.

The official Route has a main itinerary that, starting from the town's Plaza Mayor, runs along Calle
Bodeguitas towards Plaza de la Iglesia, returning again to the town square through Hastial and
Manuel de Castro streets. However, we can find these decorated tapas in different streets and houses of all towns made by the people participating in the Cultural Immersion Workshops organized by Red Arrayan in collaboration with the City Council and the El Álamo Association in the Cultural Summer 2020.

The drawings on this itinerary are mainly made by José Ángel Poveda García, a local artist and
promoter of the initiative, using the artistic drawing technique on wood, but among them we can also
find those made by the neighbors themselves who have wanted to participate in this initiative, either
through the "Cultural Immersion Workshops" or in their own way with their unique contributions and
craft skills, providing great value with active participation on a common purpose in the Community.

Each of the 65 different drawings that we can find on the itinerary are part of the iconographic sampler of Serrano Embroidery, whose information can be viewed through a QR code that will accompany each of the counters, giving more detailed access to the characteristics , origins and singularity of this Intangible Cultural Heritage of the entire Sierra de Francia.
