SANTURTZI, EDUCATING AND TEACHING
In the central decades of the 20th century, Santurtzi had a spectacular population growth. Schools and colleges became too small to accommodate the school population and the choice was made to demolish or the old buildings in order to build new ones and adapt the ones survived. As a result, the municipality has a varied range of buildings: some historical, the result of charitable foundations
of another time, such as the school of the Daughters of the Cross, the of Santa Eulalia or the old school of Nautics, and other more modern ones, sample of the transformations experienced by the town in the the last two centuries.
But, beyond the architectural interest, our schools and colleges have their own history and hide their own secrets, which we will discover from the hand of the researcher Carlos Glaria, through a
itinerary through the places and buildings that best define the diversity of santurtziarra's educational landscape.
The visit will serve as a reminder and recognition for the historian and Santurtzi chronicler Jon Koldo Fernández García de Iturrospe, a regular contributor to the European Heritage Days and Unfortunately, he died in May of this year.
