Sacred Sites in the Parish of Kilcar
Sister Catherine Campbell author of “St Cartha'a - Sacred Sites in the Parish of Kilcar” will give a talk at St Matthew’s Church and a tour of St Cartha’s Church.
St Matthew’s Church was erected in 1828. It served the Church of Ireland community until 1960. The roof was removed in the early 1960s and the building deteriorated. With the aid of a Heritage Council grant in 2023 a conservation survey was carried out and conservation work is being carried out with the support of a 2024 Heritage Council grant. The long term objective of the Kilcar Heritage Committee is the restoration of St Matthew’s Church as a local museum and heritage centre.
St Cartha’s Church was opened in 1904. The church has many interesting artefacts including fine stained glass windows, one of which is from the Harry Clarke studio. The side altar on the right is wholly of Italian Carrara marble with columns of Connemara marble executed by Edmund Sharp of Great Brunswick Street, Dublin, who considered it to be his best work.
