Overview

Although the idea was mooted as early as 1912, it was not until 1934 that the people of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode had their own swimming pool. The building, designed by architects Joseph Bytebier and Charles Schaessens, is in the Art Deco style. Blue stone and yellow brick combine beautifully on the facade, which is punctuated by openings of varying sizes. Inside, the pool’s current appearance owes much to the remodelling carried out in the 1960s, with the addition of mosaic panels and the renovation of the shower baths. However, the pool hall retains the original rows of changing rooms (there are 132), which open directly onto the pool or the covered gallery overlooking it. A barrel vault resting on concrete arches tops the structure, which is extensively pierced at the top. Affected by dry rot fungus, the baths were saved by emergency work carried out in the 1990s. The tank was also repaired at the same time. However, a more complete restoration campaign had to wait until the 2010s. The pool was closed in 2013 and did not reopen until 2019. (CL 04/06/2009).
