Overview
18 September 2025 (12:00 - 15:00) Scottish Opera invites you to drop in and freely explore its stunning Category B listed administrative headquarters at 39 Elmbank Crescent. Commissioned by the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland (IESIS) in 1907 and rarely open to the public, this impressive building was designed by local architect John Bennie Wilson in a lavish, richly ornamented Beaux Arts style. Inside, you'll find exquisite architectural details and tributes to Glasgow’s proud engineering and maritime heritage. These include:
- a grand marble staircase
- intricate plasterwork and stained-glass windows
- a memorial plaque commemorating two Glaswegian engineers who died aboard the Titanic The stunning Rankine Hall, featuring a recently restored stained-glass window depicting the Clyde-built liner Lusitania, part of a series by celebrated artist Stephen Adam, whose work reflects the institution’s engineering heritage. Now home to Scottish Opera’s administrative offices, the building also accommodates some rehearsal spaces.
