Overview

Church of Saint-Blaise-et-Saint-Nicolas in La Daguenière The village of La Daguenière was created late: it developed thanks to the construction of the lift 1, which is not completed at this point until the end of the Middle Ages. It was only in 1518 that Nicolas Houssemaine and his wife Raoulline Lelièvre founded a chapel on the rise, then attached to the parish of Saint-Jean-des-Mauvrets, located on the south shore. The territory of the parish is then subject to flooding from the Loire and Authion. In 1733, the flood rose to 5 feet high (about 1.50 meters). A dam on the left bank of the Authion was built in 1855 to contain the floods of this tributary of the Loire. The current church was built between 1822 and 1829 on plans by architect Louis François, father of architect Jacques-Louis François-Villers, author of the churches of La Bohalle, Saint-Mathurin and Brain-sur-l'Authion. The church was the subject of a first restoration campaign in 1847. The church is entirely built in shale extracted from the nearby quarries of Trélazé. The masonry is covered by a plaster on which stand out the frames of doors and tufa bays. On the facade you can see two flood marks reminiscent of the flood of 1856. One is engraved on the tufa, the other takes the form of a small metal plate on which is written: «Rupture de l'levée à La Chapelle-Blanche 2. Level of flood of June 1856». The choir and apse are distinguished by their vaults decorated with coffers, typical of neo-Greek decorations of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The church preserves relics of St. Blaise, obtained by the priest in 1859. 1 Digue 2 La Chapelle-Blanche is the former name of La Chapelle-sur-Loire, a commune located in Indre-et-Loire.
