Series of Talks on Understanding and Renovating Traditional Houses
Cork County Council’s Heritage Unit, with support from the National Built Heritage Service, have arranged a series of presentations by specialists in the field of vernacular architecture, traditional materials and skills and energy retrofitting of traditional buildings.
Speakers include Sarah-Jane Halpin of the National Built Heritage Service, who will speak on the national vernacular strategy; Mary Sleeman, one of Cork’s most experienced buildings archaeologists, who will discuss the nature of vernacular architecture in County Cork; Hugh Kavanagh of The Kings Foundation who is running the All-Ireland Heritage Skills Programme; Dr. Fanny Leenhardt, a Cork based grower who will share her own experiences in growing traditional long-straw wheat, an important material in the vernacular building tradition; Carl Raftery of the National Built Heritage Service who was instrumental in the creation of the recent guide to improving energy efficiency in traditional buildings; and Imogen Bertin of Cottageology who will discuss this years research project, helping home owners date their vernacular dwelling.
