Silverburn Flax Mill
Inside and out of The Flax Mill at Silverburn Park
Silverburn Park on the Fife coast was gifted to the people of Leven in the 1970s by the Russell family. It includes a currently derelict B-listed former Flax Mill to be brought back to life as the iconic centre piece of this wonderful Parkland. The handsome brick building is a rather rare piece of industrial heritage and will be open for a guided tour and talk, followed by a stroll to see some flax growing alongside the Mill’s bogus but beautiful ’retting pond’.
Silverburn Park’s 19thC B Listed Flax Mill is in a poor condition, however this mill is an important survivor of Fife’s industrial heritage. Arguably the best remaining example of its kind it is now being regenerated to bring it back to life as a visitor centre with hostel rooms, a café, artist studios and retail outlets.
The ambitious £8m project, to be completed by 2025, is a partnership between FEAT and Fife Council, with support from Fife Historic Buildings Trust, and is aimed at restoring the mill buildings back to use and provide income to support the park for future generations. A team of 29 are currently working on the project, with a mix of consultants, FEAT staff, Fife Council staff and volunteers.
Doors Open Day is providing a unique opportunity for digital ‘visitors’ to catch an otherwise unobtainable glimpse inside this magnificent building before restoration, and a chance to hear our chairman talk about this exciting project.
Unfortunately the mill building cannot yet provide wheelchair or limited mobility access.
