Overview

The National Heritage Week Theme for 2024 is "Connections, Routes & Networks" which our exhibition will include through the irish stamp collection which shows the history of our bridges, roads, railways, boats, airlines, buses, trams, carriages, motors and bicycles. The history of Sligo will be on exhibit in the Folk Park through 1200 plus books of Sligo interest, the vast majority of which are ist editions and signed by the authors. A collection of 360 Yeats related books, the majority ist editions with some signed. 1600 different Sligo town and county postcards and Sligo postal history coupled with over 2000 different irish stamps will be on display. The Sir Henry Gore-Booth and Countess Markievicz (Father and Daughter) outfits will take centre stage with their memorabilia to include gowns, rare babtism dress, mugshot and target practice card, signed postcards, books etc. Some of these items will be on display for the first time. 20 rare pencil drawing by Agnes Pollexfen ( sister in-law of John Butler Yeats) and drawing of Lily Yeats and water colour of John Taylor by John Butler Yeats will be on display. The coins, stamps and postcards of Yeats will add to the visitor experience. Further Sligo items will include whiskey jars, Jury delph , silver, paper currency, posters, hundreds of programmes of Sligo G.A.A. , Sligo Rovers and various other sporting events. An album of showbands will bring back many memories of times past in the dance halls. Sligo Folk Park is located in the beautiful village of Riverstown, Co. Sligo. This community based attraction provides a true experience of rural and urban life and Irish heritage at the turn of the 19th Century. Millview House is set in the grounds of the Folk Park which was orginally built in the 1870s by George Reid who was Sexton to the nearby Church of Ireland. Visitors will also be invited to visit Mrs Buckleys Cottage, the most travelled cottage in the world, which exhibited in New York, Cooley, Louisburg, Lisdoonvarna, St. Patrick's Day Parade, and the world ploughing Championship in Carlow. Other attractions include the school house, the creamery store, the Irwin immigration story, the forge, the nature trail and the fairy garden. Guides will also be available to meet and greet the visitors as they arrive and assist in any queries that may arise. Ample parking space will be available and also pay a visit the Millstone Cafe (within the Folk Park) which will be open for tasty food. All are invited to attend this very special 2024 Heritage Week.
