Sneak Peek into the Conservation Studio at the NLI: A Learning Opportunity and Professional Exchange for Students
The conservation studio of the National Library of Ireland hosts professionals from various university backgrounds across Europe, providing an ideal setting for professional exchanges and development under the shared goal of preserving and conserving Ireland’s National Heritage. In this lively setting, this year’s Heritage Council internship has been granted to the Italian conservator Rebecca Taldo.
With a personal interest in book conservation, Rebecca has been busy over the past few months conducting in-situ and extensive conservation interventions across a variety of projects, gaining essential knowledge on handling collections and managing the diverse materials found in an expanding library such as the NLI.
For Heritage Week, Rebecca will offer a sneak peek into the busy workflow of the NLI conservation studio. She will present a selection of images from ongoing book conservation projects, walking us through some of the techniques for the preservation and conservation of the library’s collections and best practices for dealing with water-damaged materials.
Rebecca Taldo graduated in 2023 with an MA degree from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Italy (Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera di Milano) in Book, Paper, and Photography Conservation. In 2022-2023 she worked on the archival collections of the National Archive in Turin (Archivio di Stato di Torino). Since May 2024, Rebecca has been working for the National Library of Ireland as the Heritage Council intern, collaborating closely with the conservators at the NLI’s busy conservation studio.
