Stamping and industrial models. Texture Factory
During the 20th century, Puerto de Sagunto stood out as the main industrial hub in the Mediterranean region. This area became prominent in the steel and metallurgical sector, driving its development from the early part of the century with the establishment of "Altos Hornos del Mediterráneo" in Puerto de Sagunto. However, the 1980s brought about industrial restructuring in Spain, leading to the closure of the Altos Hornos in Puerto de Sagunto. These factories, which had been the backbone of its economy and community for decades, disappeared in 1984. This sudden change left thousands of workers unemployed and plunged the region into a deep social and economic crisis, marking a turning point in the history of Puerto de Sagunto.
In 2024, the anniversary of the industry's closure due to the restructuring is being commemorated.
This measure was frontally opposed by the workers, who staged strong and violent protests in defense of their jobs. Finally, this struggle did not prevent the closure in 1984, but it served to keep in mind the workers' movement and industrial memory. The Effects and Spare-Parts Warehouse (future Industrial and Workers' Memory Museum) organizes several activities to commemorate the workers' memory. The foundation organize a series of family activities that pay homage to those workers who contributed to the success of the large industrial factory that determined the vital rhythms and the very existence of the population center of the Port of Sagunto. Creative workshops on the mobilizations of workers, the Puerto Sagunto’s industrial landscape and activities closely linked to the implementation of the sustainable development goals will culminate with a large participatory exhibition.
Didactical Workshop: "Stamping and Industrial Models. Texture Factory" will take place next September 27, on the occasion of International Tourism Day.
