Stories along the Bealach mór na feadhe
The Bealach mór na feadhe was a branch of the Slí Miodhluachra, one of the five great roads leaving Tara. The Bealach mór na feadhe ran through the Fews barony of South Armagh along Dorsy, Camly Ball, Tullyvallan, Clady Beg to Eamain Macha.
During the 17th and 18th century this routeway was guarded by Johnston of the Fews barracks reporting directly to Dublin Castle. John Johnston, High Sheriff of County Armagh, was of Scottish parentage and a Gaelic speaker. He was a priest and raparee hunter remembered in the words 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, Save us from Johnston, King of the Fews.
George Bleek, a Cromwellian soldier, opened Bleeks Inn along the Bealach mór na feadhe which gave refuge to Oliver Plunkett.
Our event will tell the stories of how this road was an important link to the history, social history and lives both of the people of South Armagh and nationally. The Bealach mór na feadhe carried the remains of Brian Boru after his death at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014 to his resting place in Armagh city,
