Overview

The Stradbally Woodland Railway opened in 1969 as the first volunteer-run heritage railway on the island of Ireland. Located within the grounds of Stradbally Hall, it began with a short section of track laid for the 1968 National Steam Rally, where a Guinness Brewery steam locomotive pulled small passenger carriages. The railway preserves rare examples of Ireland’s industrial heritage, particularly local steam and diesel locomotives, and helps educate visitors about this often-overlooked chapter of Irish history. We use diesel trains, pulled by our ever-reliable Ruston diesel, Rusty, for the first hour and steam trains with our steam loco, Róisín, for the rest of the day. The line runs for 1 km through a beautiful woodland on a loop line. The leisurely journey takes about 15 minutes and takes you back in time for a taste of the glory days of steam power. Get a snack or drink, including tea and coffee, from our Stemin' Brews Coffee shop, relax at our seating area next to the tracks and watch the train come and go. Ideal for a family picnic on a summer’s day! Our train is wheelchair accessible. A trip on the Stradbally Woodland Railway is a treat for all the family! Stradbally Hall is a member of Historic Houses of Ireland. Admission Prices: Adults: 8 euro Children: 4 euro Family (2 adults + 2 children): 20 euro
