Overview:
The Tenement House is a window into Glaswegian society during the Victorian era and the ‘boom times’ of the Industrial Revolution. Glasgow’s tenements were home to people from all walks of life, and by taking a closer look we can see what life was like for our recent ancestors in Glasgow throughout the 1800s and early parts of the 20th century.
Miss Agnes Toward, a shorthand typist, made this house her home from 1911 until 1965. With great affection and care, she preserved her furniture and belongings, refusing to part with items that most people would have discarded. This extensive personal collection, now a precious time capsule, offers a unique opportunity for present-day visitors to connect and empathise with the past. Moreover, the Tenement House illuminates the experiences of an ‘independent woman’ during that era, a story that is sure to resonate.
