Overview

***Online Event***
Watch the never completed short film about the Brackna Turf Cooperative now edited and restored by Creative Rathangan Meitheal.

In 1921 Gordon Lewis, Pathé’s newsreel cameraman in Ireland, joined Desmond Fitzgerald Minister for Publicity in the First Dáil, and others, to make a film about the efforts of the Brackna Turf Cooperative to raise funds by selling sods of turf in America. The film also referenced the exhumation of the ‘Ballynowlart Martyrs’ in 1917 and ‘Cattle Drives’ on the ‘Ballynowlart Estate’ some four years earlier. The film was never completed and was stored in a number of seemingly disconnected sections in the Pathe archives.

On 21 August the newly edited version of the film will be screened online for National Heritage Week in collaboration with Creative Rathangan Meitheal and the Community Wetlands Forum. The screening will be preceded by a talk on the background to the film by Laurence Fullam.
