Overview

Built for the Seulen couple, this mansion combines Beaux-Arts and Art Deco styles, and was designed by Liège architect Jules Libois, whose signature still appears on the base, together with the date 1930. The white stone, imitation stone and red brick building has three unequal bays on two levels, crowned by a wrought-iron gate on the attic. But the main interest lies in the interior of the building, which has preserved a remarkable Art Deco floral decoration. In addition to the scrolled ironwork, the stained glass windows play a major role in the appeal of the premises, with a polygonal skylight illuminating the veranda and another skylight combining foliage and corollas in pastel shades. Together with the glazed caissons in the stairwell, they allowed abundant light to enter the mansion. Today, it is home to the British International School of Brussels, which offers an English-language education to children aged 3 to 11. Set in a unique environment, the school continues to bring this history-steeped site to life; the children’s drawings perpetuate the vibrant soul of the house every day.
