The Disease of the Senses, Anne-Lise Broyer
In 1978, on the initiative of Max Schoendorff, some artists joined to save from an imminent destruction a bankrupt and outdated(obsolete) lithographic printing of Lyon. This safeguarded heritage (press, hundred-year-old lithographic stones), it was necessary to define use(custom). It is in the service(department) of creation since lithographic activity came back to life. Today, an old(former) factory of 1000 m ² shelters international Urdla-Centre print and deliver. It is about a Contemporary Arts Centre grouping(including) workshops(studios) of impression(printing) (lithograph, line-engraving, size of savings, typography(typeface)), a gallery and a bookshop. The association connects(binds) so the protection(saving) of a heritage, the support for contemporary creation, and distribution(broadcasting) of its productions to the amateurs, collectors and school. Urdla chooses and invites a dozen of plastic surgeons a year and offers them the possibility of practising the original engraving during residences. The engraving – generic term recovering all results(profits) of a process of impression(printing) — is characterised by the edition(drawing) of a limited number of copies numbered and signed by the artist, intended(designed) for sale. "Original" means that the artists work on the manufacturing of matrices, the technicians themselves making editions(drawings) then.
