The Fair Geraldine and the Tudor Court: Politics, Proximity, and Presents
Elizabeth Fitzgerald, known to history as the Fair Geraldine, was more than just a beautiful face. Raised in the royal nursery after the attainder of the House of Kildare, she was a power-house of political activity. She used her friendship with Queen Elizabeth I to advance her husband's career and protect her brother, the 11th Earl of Kildare from numerous accusations of treason. Dress historian, and PhD candidate, Melissa Shiels, will give a costumed talk on the courtly career of Elizabeth Fitzgerald, exploring the types of clothing she wore and saw in her life in Ireland and at court, and how she used gift-giving to protect the House of Kildare.
