Discover the hidden stories of Glasgow’s creative past, present, and future with a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the Archives and Collections at the Glasgow School of Art. This rich resource showcases the history of the institution and the evolution of its teaching practices since its founding in 1845.
In line with this year’s Doors Open Day theme, our guided tours will explore how generations of GSA creatives have influenced the city’s cultural, artistic and built environment. From the Glasgow Style and the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh to the impact of new and emerging artists.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Reading Room, Workroom and Collection Stores, where selected materials will be on display. These rarely seen items reveal how GSA’s creative histories are preserved, studied and reimagined today.

Overview:
The Glasgow School of Art Archives and Collections are a rich resource for the study of art, design, and architectural education. Based at The Whisky Bond, the collection is home to a wide range of materials, including artworks, architectural drawings, textiles, posters, as well as the personal papers of significant figures associated with the School. The collections provide a unique insight into the history and influence of the GSA, documenting the creative practices of its students and staff from its founding in 1845 to the present day. Housed at The Whisky Bond, the archives are accessible to researchers, students, and the public, offering a glimpse into the rich artistic heritage of Glasgow. They tell the story of GSA’s students and staff, whose ideas and innovations have helped shape Glasgow as a visionary city.
