Overview

Jonathan Smyth is the author of 'Gentleman and Scholar: Thomas James Barron, 1903 - 1992', published by Cumann Seanchais Bhreifne in 2012. He is a committee member of the Breifne Historical Society, a regular contributor to the society's academic Journal, and history columnist for The Anglo-Celt. Jonathan has worked 24 years in the Irish Public Library Service and he is the Local Studies Librarian with Cavan Library Service. This talk will provide a biographical account of the industrious lifetime and valuable studies of Thomas J. (Tom) Barron, native to Knockbride, Co. Cavan. It extends discussion of his vast contribution, as documented in the National Museum of Ireland, with particular emphasis on his ground-breaking theory on the significance of the early Iron-age 'Corleck Head' which he is credited with having ensured its preservation as one of Ireland's greatest treasures.
