Knight at the Strange Space Workshop
Workshop with artist Will Knight exploring how drawing can be used to study spaces, identify opportunities, and potentially unlock new ideas.
Drawing is a valuable tool for designers to explore and communicate their ideas. It can help us to study spaces in detail, identify issues/ opportunities, and unlock ideas for possible alternatives.
Artist Will Knight uses architectural drawing techniques to study the character of spaces and how they shape our lives. He has worked on a varied range of projects, including The Knight Map, commissioned by Glasgow City Heritage Trust to update Thomas Sulman’s aerial map of Glasgow, dating from 1864.
He is currently working on the As-Builts project, which explores documenting the current transformation of The Pipe Factory building through a variety of different media and artists.
Join Will for this hands-on drawing workshop in which he will explain his process and teach you how to do an inhabited section drawing.

Overview
The Pipe Factory building (42 Bain Street) was originally built in 1877 as part of a larger factory complex for the production of tobacco smoking pipes by William White & Son.
It was designed by architect Matthew Forsyth in the Italian Renaissance style intricate ornamental brickwork detailing and beautiful architectural features.
As well as being a successful entrepreneur, White and his family were members of the Glasgow Emancipation Society, a group of Glaswegians who campaigned for the abolition of slavery.
Finally closing in 1955, the factory complex was repurposed for a wide range of uses by many different types of occupants who have equally interesting stories.
The Pipe Factory was purchased in 2020 to protect its social and cultural heritage within the Barras and Calton.
Architects O’Donnell Brown, with conservation architects Loader Monteith have proposed a holistic retrofit which sensitively reimagines how the building can be used for a range of creative activities and also safeguarded for future generations.
