Overview

Connections between Geology, Stone carving, Memorial Design and the First Cryptogamic Life that begins the Cycle again

This graveyard features a ruin of a Board of First Fruits Church, constructed between 1790 and 1810, and documented as being still in use in 1903. This beautiful, quiet place overlooks the graceful slopes of the Leinster Range from Mount Leinster to White Mountain, and the Barrow valley below. Birds sway above the visitor on a Summer’s evening.

We will make connections between the past and present, the living and the dead, the inert minerals of rock and the wide associated biodiversity of lichens, mosses, liverworts, algae and ferns as well a as the broad range of countries from which the gravestones have been brought to this restful spot.

Join Maria Cullen, of the Irish Geological Association, as we explore the riches of this elegant and historic graveyard that dates back to, at least, the 17th Century.
