Welcome to Castlehill where you can gaze upwards and meet our newly named unicorns Deoch and Doras, who proudly crown the façade of the old school. Together with the entire exterior of the building they have recently been restored, and sport enduring new horns.
You will then enjoy our guided Silver Whisky Tour followed by a tour behind the scenes before public opening. This is a chance to see how the building has transitioned over time, from educating the Old Town’s children, to now educating the world about Scotland’s national drink!
Hidden on the peaceful top floor, away from the hustle and bustle of The Royal Mile, you’ll also see the Millenium Stained Glass Window – a wonderful homage to the past, present and future of Scotch whisky, by stained glass artist Shona McInnes - together with bespoke installations created from the whisky materials of copper, oak and glass crafted by Scottish artisans and artists.
The visit ends in the “Whisky Bonds”, once the school’s covered playground, with access to the adjacent Janitor’s House on Johnstone Terrace.

2025 Theme Architectural Heritage: Windows to the Past, Doors to the Future
The Scotch Whisky Experience was once the Castlehill School. Since 1988 a fascinating and sympathetic conversion of the building has created a fully accessible experience for guided whisky tours, private group dining and the well-loved Amber restaurant. In 2025 the exterior has been fully resorted and the two unicorns atop the façade have received new horns and new names!
