The Subtle Charm of the Meir Neighborhood in Anderlecht

avenue Paul Janson 1, 1070 Anderlecht
Show on the map
20 - 21 September 2025
Overview

In response to the demographic explosion and shortage of quality housing for the lower middle class at the beginning of the 20th century, the municipality of Anderlecht planned a second major urban development project: the construction of a new, predominantly green, residential district. Implementation and construction were delayed due to the First World War and only completed between the wars. This makes the Meir district an aesthetically coherent ensemble, representative of Brussels’ Art Deco and interwar architecture. Particular attention was paid to the facade and its decoration: colour and texture, stylised flowers and plants and a varied bestiary. Typical Art Deco glass and ironwork also feature prominently. In collaboration with Klare Lijn. Photographs are permitted, but without a flash.
