medieval duel
On either side of a small manor house which he acquired in 1444, René d'Anjou developed between 1447 and 1459 an S-shaped building whose North part, equipped with an entrance chatelet and two corner towers is dedicated to the apartments of the received lords and the South courtyard to the royal home. Despite its defensive aspect (moat walls, loopholes, fortified entrance), the castle is characteristic of the «manors in the countryside» of King René: silhouette very cut out but simple architectural volumes of the exterior facades; refinement and comfort of the interior spaces (large windows, numerous fireplaces), where the decoration is still Gothic flamboyant (chapel). Like Baugé, Launay owned a pleasure garden.
